Round 5: Create a Vignette
The technique we use to create a vignette in Photoshop can be used in InDesign (see Figure 8). The beauty of working in InDesign is that we have a frame around our image that we can easily use to change the crop. Because the effect applies to the frame, it adjusts automatically to the photograph.
The first step is to select your image and place it in InDesign using the Command+D (Mac) or Ctrl+D (Windows) shortcut. Then access the Effects panel (Window > Effects).
From the Effects pop-down at the bottom of the Effects panel, choose Inner Glow. You only need to change a few settings. Change the Blend mode to Multiply. Select a dark color that compliments your image. For instance, if your image is generally blue, select a dark blue for the Inner Glow. Change the Opacity to 100%. I would also add some noise to the Inner Glow; it will blend to the image much better. You only need around 2% to 4%, depending on the graininess of the image. Then adjust the size. This setting will of course depend on the image itself. See Figure 9 for all the settings.
