Applying Formulas and Functions
To apply a function or formula, first select an empty cell. If you want to sum (add) the contents of other cells, type an equal sign to display the formula editor (which will float over the cell, as shown in Figure 3). Next, click the cells that you want to add. Click the checkmark button to apply your calculation or the x button to discard it.
If you want to use other basic functions—such as average, count, minimum or maximum value, or product—for an entire column, you can select an empty cell toward the bottom of that column and use the toolbar’s Function menu to choose the appropriate function to apply that function using all the values entered in the column.
If you need more control or additional functions, display the formula editor and then select More Functions from the Functions menu. You can then browse through the 150+ functions included in Numbers. The Browser displays basic information about the uses of each function. Simply select each function you need and click the Insert button. As you select each function, a button is also available to open the Numbers’ Help documentation on that function.
