Embedding Your Own FLVs in a Dreamweaver Web Page
As an alternative to relying on YouTube to compress and host your video, you can use your own FLV file. With this approach, you can embed the video in Dreamweaver, choose from a substantial set of player interfaces, and define a bunch of attributes such as start volume, background color, and looping.
One way to produce an FLV video is to use the Adobe Flash Video Encoder that comes with Flash. Other conversion tools are available online, some of them free, such as the Riva FLV Encoder.
When your FLV video is ready, follow these steps to embed it in Dreamweaver and define a customized player:
- 1. Choose Insert > Media > Flash Video to open the Insert Flash Video dialog box.
- 2. Use the Browse button to navigate to the Flash Video (FLV) file on your computer. Unless you’re working with a special streaming server (and your server administrator tells you that this is the case), choose Progressive Download Video from the Video Type pop-up menu.
- 3. Click the Detect Size button in the dialog box to detect the size of the video. (This information will be useful in the next step, as not all player interfaces work with all sizes of video.) If desired, enter a new value in either the Width field and/or the Height field to resize the video. (If the Constrain check box is selected, the unedited dimension will adjust automatically to keep the height-to-width ratio of the video the same as the original.)
- 4. Use the Skin pop-up menu to select a player control set (see Figure 3). The player controls only work with specific sizes of videos. Because you detected the size of your video in the preceding step, you can see which players are available.

- 5. As needed, enable the options for autoplay, auto rewind, and/or prompting users to download Flash Player features. If you want to prompt users to download the Flash Player, you can accept or edit the default text message.
- 6. After the Flash video is embedded, use the Property inspector to adjust parameters as needed; for example, changing the size, skin, autoplay setting, and replay.
