If you’ve been following along with this tutorial from the beginning, you’ll notice that the images in your photomontage jump from one to the other in what’s known, unsurprisingly, as a jump cut. Jump cuts might suit certain rock music tracks, but if you want to use a slow melodic tune you’ll want the transition from one photo to another to be a little smoother. For this you need, unsurprisingly, a transition.
Step 1: Add Transitions
Premiere CS3 has hundreds of transitions to use and abuse (see Figure 3.1), but beware—just because they exist doesn’t mean you have to use them. In very specific cases, such as a comedy montage, you might want to use one of the more esoteric variations—the cube spin or slip over. For an everyday transition that will keep the audience’s attention on the program—and not on the special effects—you’ll probably want to stick to the cross dissolve.

To add a cross dissolve, do the following:
- Locate the Effects panel. If the panel is not already open, from the Window menu, choose Effects or press Shift+7 (see Figure 3.2).
- Click the small arrow to the left of the Video Transitions folder to display the various transition folders (see Figure 3.3).
- Open the Dissolve folder and click once on Cross Dissolve to highlight it (see Figure 3.4).
- Using the mouse, drag and drop the transition to the first clip on your timeline (see Figure 3.5). Because this is the first clip, the cross dissolve dissolves in from black.
