Merging PDF Files
Acrobat can combine multiple files into a single PDF file. The component files may be PDF files, TIFF files, EPS files, or files of any format that Acrobat can convert to PDF. This is extremely useful for combining, say, all the files associated with an invoice—the invoice itself, an expense report, scanned receipts, justifications for your hourly rate, letters from your doctor—into a single file you can email.
To merge several PDF files into a single PDF file:
Choose Combine > Merge Files into a Single PDF (Figure 4.18); or, on the Tasks toolbar, choose Combine Files > Merge Files.
Figure 4.18 Acrobat lets you combine several files into a single PDF file.
The Combine Files dialog box opens (Figure 4.19). This dialog box lets you choose a list of files to combine.
Figure 4.19 This dialog box lets you choose the files you want to merge.
Choose one of the following from the Add Files drop-down menu (Figure 4.20):
- Add Files lets you add individual files to the list.
- Add Folders lets you choose a folder, all of whose convertible contents will be added to the list.
- Reuse Files lets you choose files inside a PDF Portfolio. (We'll talk about PDF portfolios in the next chapter.)
- Add Open Files allows you to choose among the files currently open in Acrobat.
Figure 4.20 You may add files one at a time or a whole folder at once, or use previously merged files or currently open files.
No matter which option you choose, an Open dialog box appropriate to the task opens (Figure 4.21).
Figure 4.21 Each of the Add options presents you with an Open dialog box appropriate to the type of files.
The list of files currently selected is displayed in the Combine Multiple Files dialog box. You can click the Move Up and Move Down arrows beneath the list to alter the files' order.
Click the Single PDF radio button in the upper right corner of the Combine Multiple Files dialog box.
We'll discuss the alternative, PDF Portfolio, in the next chapter.
Click Combine Files.
Acrobat merges the files together and presents you with a standard Save dialog box.
Specify a name for the new, merged PDF file and click OK.
Acrobat saves the new PDF file.
