When you publish a brochure (or a newsletter, or flyer—you name it) for on-screen viewing rather than for print, you can include dynamic and interactive content in the document. Add animated page transitions, hyperlinks between pages, links to web pages on the Internet, embedded or streamed video files, and more.
Creating Hyperlinks
Web surfers and readers of interactive PDF or Flash documents are so accustomed to using hyperlinks that their absence would be more surprising than their presence. Readers expect that when they click an entry in a table of contents they will jump to the respective page in the document. Luckily, hyperlinks are easily created in InDesign and are fully functional when exported to PDF or Flash format.
- In InDesign, navigate to the cover page of the brochure.
- Choose View > Screen Mode > Normal. With the Selection tool, click the text frame near the bottom of the page containing the headline "The Private Investigator." Clicking anywhere on that text in the exported document should take the reader to the main story on page 3.
- Right-click/Control-click the text frame and choose Interactive > New Hyperlink from the context menu
- From the Link To menu in the New Hyperlink dialog box, choose Page. Under Destination, select Brochure.indd from the Document menu and type 3 as the destination Page number. To maintain the same level of magnification the reader is using when they click the hyperlink, choose Inherit Zoom from the Zoom Setting menu. Under Appearance, choose Invisible Rectangle from the Type menu and Invert from the Highlight menu. Make sure your settings are exactly as shown on the illustration on the next page, and then click OK.
You've just created a hyperlink that uses a text frame as the source and a page inside the document as the destination. You can create a hyperlink that uses a graphic frame as the source in the same way.
In the next step you'll define a text selection—instead of an entire text frame—as a hyperlink source.
- Use the Type tool to select the second sell line title and description inside the text frame on the left side of the cover page. Right-click/Control-click the text selection and choose Interactive > New Hyperlink from the context menu, or, with the text selected in the text frame, click the Create New Hyperlink button in the Hyperlinks panel (Window > Interactive > Hyperlinks).
- In the New Hyperlink dialog box, use the same settings you used in step 4, but type 4 instead of 3 for the destination Page number. Click OK to close the New Hyperlink dialog box.
