Default Object Styles
Three object styles are built into every InDesign document that cannot be renamed or deleted. Two of them—Basic Graphic Frame and Basic Text Frame—can have their attributes modified, but the None style cannot be edited in any way.
The Basic Graphic Frame default has no fill, a 1pt black solid stroke, and all transparency set to the Normal blend mode at 100% opacity. All other attribute categories are shut off for this style.
The Basic Text Frame default is a single-column frame with a 1-pica (.1667”) gutter, no inset spacing, no fill or stroke, vertically justified to the top, and a first line baseline offset of Ascent. All transparency is set to the Normal blend mode at 100% opacity. Paragraph Styles, Story Options, Text Wrap & Other, Anchored Object Options, and Frame Fitting Options are ignored by this style.
By default, new text frames are created with the Basic Text Frame style applied unless you specifically change that setting. New graphic and unassigned frames, strokes, shapes, and objects drawn with the Pen tool, however, are assigned the None style, not Basic Graphic Frame.
Assigning Default Object Styles
Object styles have a unique take on the default style concept. Paragraph styles default to Basic Paragraph, and character styles default to None. As you’ll see in the next chapter, table styles and cell styles have their own defaults, too. Since objects can be text or graphic frames, object styles have two “assignable” defaults.
In the Object Styles panel (Window > Object Styles or Command/Ctrl-F7), the basic styles have an icon next to their names (Figure 5.5) indicating one as the default object style for text frames and one as the default object style for graphic frames . Any object style can be assigned as the default text frame style or the default graphic frame style, or both (Figure 5.6). To assign a default, select a style from the Object Styles panel, and from the panel menu, choose Default Text Frame Style or Default Graphic Frame Style (whichever is appropriate) and select the desired style from the submenu.
