Brushing and Painting – The Next Level
Two things that artists were critical of in Photoshop were the ability to mix paint and the ability to have greater control of the brushes that were present. Adobe has taken a bold step forward in addressing both of these scenarios in Photoshop CS5. The Bristle Brushes in Photoshop CS5 give users the ability to leverage pen technology in the application.
Create a new document of any size and press the letter B to access the Brush tool. Once it’s selected, go into the Brush Panel dropdown, where you’ll notice the new Bristle brushes. Once you select one, a 3D popup will appear to the right of the toolbar showing you the position of the brush. You also get a good representation of the brush as you hover over the canvas. Tilt the brush to the right and left and you’ll see the changes to the brush head appear on the canvas, as well as on the Brush Preview window.

Adding to this technology is Photoshop CS5’s new Mixer Brush. With the Mixer Brush selected, you have the ability to take different colors on the canvas and mix them together to create additional colors – much like you would in a traditional painting scenario. Adding to this, Photoshop CS5 has the option to change how the colors behave with one another in the Brush Presets. You can simulate wet brushes that mix very heavily with the colors on the canvas, or dry brushes that mix lightly. You even have the ability to “clean” the brush after every use or watch how the colors in the brush run out as you use them on the canvas. Adding this technology in a Photographic environment will let photographers who are not artistically inclined reduce the learning curve of traditional painting and add more of a Canvas feel to their works.
