Edit Flash Catalyst Content in Illustrator or Photoshop
What’s really great is that you can edit Flash Catalyst vector content in Illustrator and raster content in Photoshop pretty easily. If you select content in Flash Catalyst, you can right-click or choose Modify > Edit in Adobe Illustrator CS5 or Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS5 to edit the content in those programs, save it, and update it in Flash Catalyst.
Flash Catalyst shows you either menu item depending on the content you select. In other words, select Vector Content and you see the Edit in Adobe Illustrator CS5 option; select Raster Images and you see Edit in Adobe Illustrator CS5 and Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS5. I suggest opening raster content (created in Photoshop) in Photoshop, not Illustrator. If you select multiple objects that are a mix of raster and vector, you can choose in which application to open the content.
Editing Flash Catalyst in Illustrator
So let’s edit some Flash Catalyst content in Illustrator, first:
- With the Selection tool (or Direct Selection tool) in Flash Catalyst, select some vector content. Right-click that content and choose Edit in Adobe Illustrator CS5 or choose Modify > Edit in Adobe Illustrator CS5.
- Notice that when you are taken to Illustrator, only the selected content is editable. Make some changes and save the file, or click Done in the Editing from Adobe Flash Catalyst bar at the top of the Document window (see Figure 9). When the FXG Options dialog box appears, click OK (after analyzing the options), as shown in Figure 10. Flash Catalyst should appear, and the changes should be made.

If you added new content in Illustrator, that content will appear in Flash Catalyst as well.

Editing Flash Catalyst in Photoshop
Now let’s edit some content in Photoshop.
- With the Selection tool (or Direct Selection tool) in Flash Catalyst, select some raster content (only), such as an image. Right-click that content and choose Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS5 or choose Modify > Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS5.
- A warning dialog box will appear telling you that you need to install the FXG extension for Photoshop first. If you haven’t installed the extension, click the link (see Figure 11). This should open a browser and take you to the Adobe Labs page.
- After installing the extension and restarting Photoshop, click OK in the Edit in Adobe Photoshop dialog box that appears in Flash Catalyst, and the selected content will open in Photoshop. Notice that the layers are different than the layers in Flash Catalyst.
- Make and edit to the file, then choose File > Scripts > Simply Layers for FXG.
- Save the file and close it.
- Back in Flash Catalyst, you will see the edit.
