Articles make up 90 percent of your site content. While site content is usually thought of as text and images, articles can also contain forms, video, entire photo galleries, links, modules, and even custom scripts such as Google or Facebook widgets. Any type of web medium can be placed into an article and placed on your site.
In this chapter, you’ll learn how to create articles and assign them to categories, how to add media using the Media Manager and your editor, and how to control the display of articles using article menus.
Using the Article Managers
The Article Manager is directly connected to your Category and Featured Article Managers and allows you to navigate between them while developing content for your site.
The one requirement when creating articles is that all articles must be assigned to a category, so you first need to create your categories. Without categories, you will not be able to save an article. If you haven’t chosen your categories, you can assign articles to the uncategorised category.
To use the Article Manager:
- Log in to the back end.
- Choose Content > Article Manager, or click the Article Manager icon on the Control Panel page.
The Article Manager: Articles opens with links to Articles, Categories, and Featured Articles Managers
.
In the Article Manager you can create, edit, publish, unpublish, archive, check in, or delete any article created for the site.
Featured articles are simply articles you have marked as featured. A featured article is listed in both the Article Manager and the Featured Article Manager.
To sort, filter, or search articles:
- Open the Article Manager.
Because a site generally contains numerous articles, you’ll usually want to apply the sort and filter options in the Article Manager. Like all managers, you can use either the sort fields or the column headings to do so, and sort the article lists by State, Category, Access Level, Author, or Language.
- From the Select Category drop-down list, choose Components
.
The Article Manager now displays only those articles assigned to the Components category
.
One thing the sort fields don’t do, at the time of this writing, is display articles assigned to subcategories of a selected category.
- From the Select Category drop-down list, choose Modules.
No articles are displayed in the Article Manager because no articles are directly assigned to the Modules category. Articles can be assigned to only a single category regardless of whether the category is a parent, child, or grandchild category.
- From the Select Category drop-down list, choose Content Modules.
No articles are directly assigned to the parent category Modules, but Content Modules—the subcategory or child category of Modules—does have articles assigned. Those articles appear in the list only when the Content Modules category is directly selected.
- Reset the Select Category drop-down list to Select Category.
- In the Title column, click the word “Title.”
If you are looking for an article and know its category, state, or author, you can click the column headings to sort the list by ascending or descending order. By clicking Title, the articles are now listed alphabetically
.
- In the Filter field, type Article and then click Search.
If you know any part of an article’s title, you can use the Filter field to search for the article
.
- Click Clear to display all articles again.
- Click the Featured Articles link to open Article Manager: Featured Articles
.
The Featured Article Manager displays only articles marked as featured. However, all featured articles are also displayed in the Article Manager.
- Scroll to the bottom of the Article Manager screen.
- From the Display # drop-down list, choose 10.
Using the pagination at the bottom of the manager can also help sort article lists for a more manageable display
.
