Basics and Beyond
As with many other artistic techniques, certain rules for framing have taken hold, because they tend to create images that are aesthetically satisfying. The word rule may give pause to some photographers and videographers, as it implies a lack of creative freedom; however, even if you cringe at the vocabulary, it's worth understanding the basic ideas behind these solid techniques. Used in an average shooting scenario, these procedures are likely to result in an excellent shot.
Even if you're trying to create the opposite of "tried and true," and you want to break all conventions in your shooting, I still urge you to try these rules. That will allow you to be decisive and determined in your reckless ("artistic") shooting, instead of random and haphazard ("sloppy").
