You've fired up your brand-new OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. And you've been digging through a good book on it, maybe something like my new OS X Mountain Lion: Peachpit Learning Series. You think you know it all. But this OS is so robust that lots of details are easy to overlook. Here are seven little tricks that can make your experience using Mountain Lion even better.
Secret 1: Share from TextEdit
TextEdit is an extraordinarily handy application for creating text files. But you might have noticed that it lacks the nifty new Mountain Lion Share button. If you're like me, you appreciate this handy button on the toolbar that lets you send whatever you have open to Mail, Messages, your Twitter account, or other places, depending on what you're trying to share. Without the Share button present on the TextEdit toolbar, I'm left without a super-quick way to share my TextEdit work.
But there's a way to take advantage of Mountain Lion's sharing capability in TextEdit, even without the Share button. First, open a document in TextEdit. Make sure you have no blank lines selected (or this trick won't work) and then Control-click somewhere in your document to open the context menu. Bam! There's the Share option (see Figure 1). Click Share and choose the way you want to share your text document.
