Grouping photos as Events
When was your favorite photo taken? Was it at an anniversary dinner? Before your daughter’s school concert? Or during a week-long tropical cruise? The new Events view in Photoshop Elements 11 helps you tag your photos by occasion, making it even simpler to search your image library for all those precious memories.
Creating Events from the Media Browser.
You can select the images from a particular occasion in the thumbnail grid, and then create a new Event to group them, without even leaving the Media Browser.
- In the Media Browser, group-select
the first twenty-one photos
with the capture date 6/26/2010.
Click the Add Event button (
)
in the Task bar. - In the Add New Event panel to the right of the thumbnails, type Annie’s Wedding as the name of the new Event. Photoshop Elements has automatically set both the start and end dates to the capture date of the selected photos. Click Done at the right of the Task bar to confirm and save the new Event.

An invitation to the Events view
- Click the word Events in the view picker at the top of the Organizer workspace to switch to the Events view, where you can see the newly created Event.
- Move the pointer slowly across the Annie’s Wedding stack to see all the images in this Event. Stop the pointer when you see your favorite photo from the set. To make this photo the top image in the stack, right-click / Control-click it and choose Set As Cover.
- Double-click the Annie’s
Wedding stack to expand it;
then, click the Add Media
button (
)
in the Task bar at the bottom
of the workspace. - Under Basic at the left of the Add Media dialog box, make sure that All Media is set as the image source. Scroll down to find the wedding photos. Shift-click to select the photo of a little girl dancing with a young woman in a pink dress and the shot of the newlywed couple cutting the cake. Click Add Selected Media at the bottom of the dialog box; then, click Done.
- Check the image count in the
lower left corner of the workspace;
there are now 23 images in this
Event. In the Folders list at
the left of the workspace, click
the folder Import4; the Events
view shows that this folder
contains only four of the photos
from Annie’s Wedding,
and that there are no other
Events in the folder. Click
the listing for the Import 3
folder; the other 19 images
are in this folder. Collapse
Annie’s Wedding to an
Event stack by clicking the
Back button (
).

Getting smart about creating Events
You can avoid the effort of locating the images for a new Event manually by letting Photoshop elements find the important occasions in your catalog automatically.
- Click the switch in the actions bar to switch to Smart Events mode.
- Right-click / Control-click each of these stacks and choose Name Event(s) from the menu. Name the new Events NY Marathon 2010 and NY Marathon 2011.
- The other suggested stack
has nine photos shot at a street
festival. Select this stack,
and then click the Name Events
button ()
in the Task bar and name the
new Event Carnival.
Click OK.
In Smart Events mode, Photoshop Elements suggests likely Event stacks amongst the photos in your catalog—or in a selected folder—on the basis of capture dates. Smart Events has separated the nineteen New York marathon photos into two stacks: eleven images captured on 11/7/2010, and eight photos from 11/6/2011.
TIP
You won’t see the Event names in Smart Events mode; they’ll be visible when you switch to Events.

Creating long Events
- Click the All Events button at the left of the actions bar. Scroll down through the Smart Events stacks to find the three adjacent stacks dated 4/9/2012, 4/10/2012, and 4/11/ 2012. Shift-click to select all three stacks.
- Click the Name Events button
()
in the Task bar. In the Name
Event dialog box, type Spring
Vacation as the name
of the new Event. Photoshop
Elements has already set the
start and end dates for the
combined Smart Events to the
capture dates of the oldest
and most recent photos in the
selection. In the Description
box, type Touring Tuscany;
then, click OK to create the
Event.
- Click the switch in the actions bar to switch from Smart Events mode to the regular Events view.
- Move the pointer slowly across
each stack to review the contents,
and then right-click / Control-click
each Event to set a new cover
photo. Click the Info button

the Spring Vacation stack to
see the description you entered.
