Changing speed and duration with the Rate Stretch tool
Sometimes you’ll search for a clip that’s just the right length to fill a gap in your Timeline. Often, you’ll find a clip that’s just a little too short or a little too long. This is where the Rate Stretch tool comes in handy.
- In the Project panel, load the sequence 03 Rate Stretch.
- Select the Rate Stretch tool (rate_stretch_tool.tiff) in the Tools panel.
- With the Rate Stretch tool selected, drag the right edge of the first video clip until it meets the second video clip.
- Drag the right edge of the second clip until it meets the third clip.
- Drag the right edge of the third clip until it matches the end of the audio.
- Play the Timeline to view the result.
- Press the V key or click on the Selection tool to select it.
The situation in this example is fairly common. The Timeline is synchronized to music, and the clips contain the content you want, but the clips are just too short. You can make a guess and try to make exactly the Speed/Duration adjustment but it’s much easier and faster to use the Rate Stretch tool to click and drag the end of the clip to fill the gap.
The speed of the first clip changes to fill the space into which you stretched it. The contents haven’t changed, the clip is playing more slowly.
