Exercise 2.2 Create Apple IDs
Challenge
Create two Apple IDs:
- Create what this guide refers to as an “administrator Apple ID” that you will use to purchase OS X Server (or redeem a code for OS X Server) in the App Store. You will also supply the credentials for this administrator Apple ID in the Server app to enable push notification.
- Create what this guide refers to as a “client testing Apple ID,” without a credit card.
Considerations
It’s best practice to use an Apple ID that’s associated with an organization—rather than a personal Apple ID—for purchasing OS X Server and enabling Apple push notifications with the Server app. If you already have access to an Apple ID that has purchased Server, you do not need to create another Apple ID for the following exercises.
While you could use the iCloud preferences in OS X to create an Apple ID for use with iCloud, there is a per-device limit, so you might want to use the App Store or iTunes instead.
Solution
Create and verify your administrator Apple ID
If you already have access to an Apple ID that has purchased OS X Server, and want to use that Apple ID for these exercises, you can skip this section, and continue with the section, “Create your client testing Apple ID.”
- On your client Mac, open App Store.
- From the Store menu, choose Create Account.
- At the “Welcome to the App Store window,” click Continue.
- Read the Terms and Conditions and Apple Privacy Policy. Select the checkbox to agree to the terms and conditions, and click Agree.
- Provide the appropriate details to set up your administrator Apple ID.
- Click Continue.
- In the “Provide a Payment Method” window, enter the appropriate information, and click Create Apple ID.
- Check mail for the email address associated with the new Apple ID.
- Click the Verify Now link included in the message from Apple.
- Enter the Apple ID and password you just created, and click Verify Address.
- If Safari asks to save this password, click “Never for This Website.”
- After the My Apple ID website informs you, “Email address verified,” close the Safari window.
- In App Store, at the Verify Apple ID pane, click OK.
- In App Store, at the Congratulations pane, close the App Store window.
In the Email field, enter an email address you have access to that is not yet associated with an Apple ID.
You may want to make a record of your security questions to help you recall them later.
The My Apple ID site opens.
Create your client testing Apple ID
- On your Mac, open App Store if necessary.
- From the Store menu, choose Sign Out.
- In the Search field, enter TextWrangler, and press Return.
- In the search results, select TextWrangler and inspect the details of the app.
- Click Free.
- Click Install App.
- In the Sign in pane, click Create Apple ID.
- In the “Welcome to the App Store” pane, click Continue.
- Select the checkbox to agree to the terms and conditions, and then click Agree.
- Enter the appropriate details to set up your client testing Apple ID.
- Click Continue.
- In the “Provide a Payment Method” window, confirm that the Payment Type is None.
- Enter your Billing Address information, and click Create Apple ID.
- Check the email client that receives email for the address associated with the new Apple ID.
- In the confirmation email you receive from Apple, click the Verify Now link.
- Enter the Apple ID and password you just created, and click Verify Address.
- Close the Safari window.
- In App Store, in the Verify Apple ID pane, click OK.
- In App Store, in the Congratulations pane, click Start Shopping.
For the Email field, use an email address you have access to that is not yet associated with an Apple ID.
You may want to make a record of your security questions to help you remember them later.
The My Apple ID site opens.
The My Apple ID website informs you, “Email address verified.”
You just used App Store to create an Apple ID that is not connected to any payment information.
In this exercise you created what this guide refers to as your “administrator Apple ID” and your “client testing Apple ID” for use in the rest of this guide.
