Master Composition in Your Travel and Street Photography
Creating with intention
This book is appropriately titled “From Snapshots to Great Shots” because our main objective is to take your everyday images to the next level. One of the surest ways to achieve this is to have a better understanding of composition.
For most of us, including myself, a snapshot is a quick click of the shutter button without much consideration for composition or exposure. Every once in a while we get lucky and a snapshot is a great shot, but it’s rare. Thus the word I want you to focus on in this chapter is intent. In previous chapters we started removing luck from the equation by exploring our technical intent for creating a better exposure by using ISO, aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, and metering. In this chapter we will explore our creative intent by focusing our efforts on making a stronger and more compelling composition. We will learn to use the rule of thirds, lines, curves, patterns, layers, color, and other compositional tools to create more captivating images. Remember, as we move through this chapter, there is no right or wrong way of doing things—but whatever you do, it should be intentional!
