Ribs

Some animators go as far as to create skeletal ribs for their characters, as shown in Figure 19. This complicates the setup, but it does have the advantage of keeping the upper torso fairly rigid while allowing the belly to remain flexible. Setting up the chest in this manner can also help a character breathe more realistically.
