Preparing the Graphite Gelatin
After a few experiments I came up with this recipe for making one 12-inch by 12-inch panel:
- 1/2 cup distilled water
- 1 tablespoon Golden Polymer Medium (gloss)
- 1 heaping tablespoon graphite
- 1 tablespoon gelatin
To prepare one 12 × 12 panel, dissolve the gelatin in the cold water; then heat it to no more than 140 degrees. Stir in the graphite and then add the polymer medium. When this preparation cools to 100–110 degrees, it's ready to use.
For this example, I was making a lot of panels, so I used an electric fry pan and a Teflon roasting pan to make a double boiler. I put water in the fry pan to heat the gelatin evenly and keep it at 110 degrees (see Figure 3).
