Step 4: Laying in the Underpainting
Using the new Pastel variant you created previously, choose a color in the Colors panel and begin painting. I adjusted my new variant's size and opacity as I worked; for instance, switching to a 50% opacity when painting the sunrise light shining over the ridge of the hill. Figure 9 shows the first colors roughed in on the hills, bridge, and water.

To enhance the sunrise mood, I painted heavier strokes of creamy gold and brighter oranges on the sky and on the highlights on the water, as shown in Figure 10.
