Selecting Partial Elements
Sometimes, you want to select just a portion of a line segment, curve, or shape. You can use the arrow tool to draw a rectangle that selects just a slice of an element. The lasso tool is particularly good for this task, because it can select portions of various shapes.
To select part of a line or outline:
Select the arrow or lasso tool.
To make a selection, do one of the following:
With the arrow tool, click and drag out a rectangle that encloses just a piece of the line or outline; then release the mouse button (Figure 3.12).
Figure 3.12 You can use the arrow tool to create a selection rectangle that selects a portion of a shape.
With the lasso, draw a shape that encloses just a piece of the line or outline (Figure 3.13).
Figure 3.13 The lasso tool gives you greater freedom to select a particular arc of the oval.
With the lasso set to Polygon mode, create a series of line segments that enclose just a piece of the line or outline, and double-click to close the shape.

To select part of a fill:
Select the arrow or lasso tool.
To make a selection, do one of the following:
With the arrow tool, click and drag out a rectangle that encloses a slice of the element; then release the mouse button (Figure 3.14).
Figure 3.14 The arrow tool cuts a swath through this ribbon-shaped fill, selecting just part of each zigzag.
With the lasso, draw a shape that encloses part of the line or outline (Figure 3.15).
Figure 3.15 The lasso tool selects just a portion of the ribbon shape.
With the lasso in Polygon mode, create a series of line segments that enclose part of the line or outline, and double-click to close the shape (Figure 3.16).
Figure 3.16 In Polygon mode, the lasso can select disparate areas of the ribbon easily.
Flash highlights only what was inside the rectangle or the shape drawn with the lasso.
TIP
You can define a single selection area that encompasses multiple elements or parts of multiple elements. The lasso and polygon lasso tools offer the most flexibility for grabbing different elements.
