Dress It Up, Dress It Down
You can apply countless other treatments to an image like this. Aside from the obvious like resizing the image or changing its colors, you can try applying a few filter effects or superimposing a flag. Sometimes people can over-use filters like Alien Skin's Eye Candy 4000 but they can create nice effects when used with care. I added Motion Trail, Bevel Boss and HSB Noise with great results. I also added a few fill patterns to create an American flag effect on the map.

TIP
If you're working with Photoshop CS, try using some layer comps to show different results.
Of course that's just scratching the surface of what's possible. Try mapping out some effects of your own. Remember, Photoshop and Illustrator were designed to work together and complement one another. I used them to create a special effect for the web but you can use them together for any number of projects, from software interfaces, to illustrated brochures, to cartoon strips. Each program's strengths will really shine through.
