"Painting" Selections Using Quick Mask
Quick Mask mode is a handy "paint on" way of making a selection that's useful when the area to select is not distinct. One use for this feature, for example, is to select a person's teeth to whiten them, as shown in Figure 6. To use the Quick Mask mode, it's best to first make a rough selection around the area and then click the Edit in Quick Mask Mode tool at the foot of the toolbox (or press Q). The area that you had selected will show onscreen and the remainder of the image will be covered with a semitransparent ruby overlay, indicating that it's masked (not selected).

You can now paint on the image, paint the mask onto areas you don't want to be selected, or paint to remove it from areas you do want to be selected. Select the brush and opacity to use. Then paint with white to remove the mask, black to paint on the mask, or gray to partially mask the area. When you have the ruby overlay in position exactly where you want it, click the Edit in Standard Mode tool in the toolbox; the selection marquee will appear around the selected area.
