Configuring Project Settings
Project settings usually configure hardware, file formats, storage locations, and other items that affect the entire project, and they therefore cannot be changed for individual users of the same project.
If you have projects with multiple users, you will want to pay special attention to the project settings and make sure each individual Xpress Pro user understands the standards for the project settings.
The project settings are as follows:
- Audio Project: These settings provide audio hardware information and allow you to choose the audio format and sampling rate for your project. In addition, there are various other audio-related options to configure. (For more information, see Chapter 4, "Capturing and Importing Media," and Chapter 12, "Working with Audio.")
- Film: These settings pertain only to projects that originated on film and that will end up on film. These settings ensure that your film's negative cutter will be able to translate your work from Xpress Pro into an accurately cut film negative. (For more information on using film-editing options in Xpress Pro, see Chapter 15, "Special Features and Bundled Applications.")

General:
These settings are a miscellaneous group of project parameters. You will not want to change most of these settings in the course of your project (
Figure 3.38
).The General Settings dialog box includes these options:

- Temporary File Directory: This is where intermediate movie files are stored when you export a movie from Xpress Pro. By default, this folder is in the same location as the Xpress Pro application. If you run out of room on one hard drive, you can put this folder on a different drive.
- Default Starting TC: Whenever you create a sequence, the first frame of the sequence will be assigned whatever timecode value you enter in the Default Starting TC field. (For more information on creating sequences, see Chapter 5, "Preparing to Edit.")

Project Format:
You can select only one format per project (NTSC or PAL). To use a different format, you must quit Xpress Pro, relaunch, create a new project, and choose a different format from the Format pull-down menu (
Figure 3.39
).

- Use Windows Compatible File Names: If you are working on a Windows system or know that at least one of the files you create in Xpress Pro will eventually end up on a Windows platform, definitely leave this option checked.
- Allow File Names to Exceed 27 Characters: Usually, you will leave this option unchecked. Most applications don't accept such long names.
- Media Creation: These settings, which are in the same dialog box you get when you choose Tools > Media Creation, tell Xpress Pro which media files will be stored on which drives. (For more information, see Chapter 4, "Capturing and Importing Media.")
- Safe Color: Use these settings to tell Xpress Pro whether to warn you about violations of three specified safe color limits. You can also set those limits here. (For details on using safe color settings, see Chapter 10, "Color Correction.")
- Video Display: Use these settings to determine whether or how your sequence plays your real-time effects. (See "Configuring Real-Time Settings" in Chapter 11.)
