Wireless device discovery can be as complicated or as simple as you want to make it. Just doing a wardrive looking at your facilities’ access points might only take an hour to perform and analyze the data. However, if you do a deep dive and go looking at all the clients on all the networks, you may bite off more than you can chew. Once you go looking through your network in earnest, you’ll probably realize that the problem of monitoring all your devices is more than spot audits with discovery programs are capable of handling. Wireless IDS and network monitoring can be very useful to help maintain the long-term security of your network. However, manually going through your enterprise a few times is a very interesting and useful task that, at the very least, will leave you with an appreciation for how complex a wireless network can really be.
