USING THE GROW COMMAND
Depending on the color range of what you are selecting, rather than Shift+clicking several times to complete your selection, choose Grow from the Select menu. The Grow command finds pixels similar in color to what is already selected. The amount that the selection “grows” is based on the tolerance setting in the Options bar: The higher the number, the larger the selection. Again, experiment with a low tolerance setting as well as a high setting.
