List Window and Filter Window
If you look at your newly mapped site, you’ll notice a couple of dandy rollaway menus, generally tucked away on the left. The List Window and the Filter Window pop open as you mouse across each menu. You might also notice that as your cursor glides off the rollaway menu, it closes. Accordingly, I always click the pushpin toggle at the lower corner to pin these pesky things open while I use them, as shown in Figure 5.

All the real business of control in Visio happens in the List Window and Filter Window, rather than in the main view. Each of these windows takes the same data that appears in the map and slices it in a different way:
- The List Window shows the files presented in the map in a hierarchical listing. You can easily remove a branch from the site map by clearing a checkbox in the List Window. Any time you go back and check the box, the branch will pop back into your staging area. Once you delete something from the List Window, however, it’s gone from the map permanently.
- The Filter Window shows all the files in the map organized by file type. In this window, you can remove from view any kind of file—say graphics or .ASP files—so that they aren’t cluttering up your view of the site map.
