Lists and Captions
TextEdit also has a basic list-building tool above the ruler in the document window for arranging things like bullet points and numbered clauses. Like styles, personalized lists can be created on the fly and in much the same way.
From the Lists pull-down menu, choose Other and then create the list formatting required. You could create a list of figure caption titles for example by running Figure 1, Figure 2, and so on by using "Figure " (note the space) as the prefix, selecting normal numbers on the bullet/number pull-down menu, and leaving the suffix field empty.
Unfortunately for the power user, even compared with the Styles menu, the Lists menu is rather feeble. For one thing, personalized list styles are lost when the document is closed, and the range of built-in styles is very limited—nothing as diverse as those in Word, for example.
