The Photoshop and Painter Artist Tablet Book, by Cher Threinen-Pendarvis,
is a wonderful book for anyone interested in drawing, painting,
or illustrating using a computer. Cher’s extensive knowledge
of traditional and digital painting and illustrating is evident
as she guides the reader through the tools and options of Adobe
Photoshop and Corel Painter. She teaches the reader simple techniques
for customizing the brushes and pens to achieve beautiful results.
With an easy-to-follow style and detailed step-by-step instruction,
Cher provides valuable tips for improving the expressive quality
of hand-drawn art on the computer.

With the never-ending advancement of technology, it is easy
to forget just how nascent expressive painting on a computer
actually is. As of this writing, desktop painting tools have
been available less than 25 years; Photoshop and Painter are
both now less than 16 years old. By necessity, instructional
books for these applications have had to focus largely on the
tools themselves, leaving little room for actual discussion of
expressive technique. Thanks to Cher Pendarvis, this has changed.
The Photoshop and Painter Artist Tablet Book is written with
the assumption that Photoshop and Painter, coupled with a pressure-sensitive
stylus and tablet, are expressive tools. From this proposition,
Cher proceeds to offer the user tried-and-true exercises to coax
our expressive self out of the shadows and into the bright light
of the monitor. By applying traditional art techniques to digital
tools, the resulting imagery is capable of expressing greater
subtlety, as well as a more personal statement by the artist.
Kudos to Cher for bringing time-honored expressive techniques
to aspiring digital artists. In a world full of empty visual
calories, The Photoshop and Painter Artist Tablet Book is a gourmet
cookbook capable of propelling us to a greater personal expression."
--John Derry, one of the original developers of Painter
"Cher demystifies the process of seeing your subject and
translating its form and color into line and brushwork--so that's
how you do it!
--Linnea Dayton, author of The Photoshop Wow! Book
